Description

This 1880 map of the United States was published by Carl Flemming and edited by F. Handtke.  The map provides a detailed and colorful depiction of the United States, including state and territorial boundaries, major cities, transportation networks, and geographical features.

The map’s legend (Erklärung), located in the lower left corner, explains various symbols and markings used throughout the map. It differentiates settlements by size and importance, marking individual homesteads, farms, small villages, and railway stations with distinct symbols. Larger towns and cities, including the capitals of states and territories, are underlined (Regierungssitze). Railroads (Eisenbahn) are prominently marked with dashed lines, while significant steamship routes (Wichtige Dampferverbindungen) are indicated with red lines. The map also denotes significant geographical features such as swamps (Sumpf), cliffs, and reefs (Klippe, Riff).

Political divisions are clearly delineated. The United States is depicted with state and territorial boundaries, with Native American reservations (Indianer-Reservationen) marked separately. The map also includes the neighboring regions of Britische Besitzungen (British possessions, referring to Canada), the Föderativrepublik Mexico (Federative Republic of Mexico), and Spanische Kolonien (Spanish colonies, including Cuba and Puerto Rico).

An inset in the lower right corner details Alaska and the Westindische Inseln (West Indies), reflecting U.S. interests beyond the mainland, particularly after the purchase of Alaska in 1867. Maritime trade routes and transatlantic connections are marked, showing the growing role of the United States in global commerce.
