Description

This 1842 map of Wisconsin and Iowa by Jeremiah Greenleaf captures the territorial boundaries and regions during a period of significant westward expansion and settlement in the United States. This map is notable for its detailed depiction of indigenous territories, including areas marked for tribes such as the Chippewa, Menomonee, and Winnebago. The "Iowa" on this map refers to the Iowa Territory, established in 1838, which at the time encompassed a large region west of the Mississippi River, including present-day Iowa and parts of Minnesota and the Dakotas.

The map highlights rivers, geographic features, and early settlements. State and territorial boundaries are demarcated with bold red lines, while some areas to the west remain largely unmapped and sparsely populated.

The settled counties are colored in such a way as to draw attention to the areas of concentrated population and development along the southeastern edge of the map.
