Description

This vibrant vintage travel poster for Grace Line's Caribbean and South America cruises, created by Carl G. Evers, captures the bustling port scene of Willemstad, Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles. The artwork, possibly featuring the SS Santa Rosa (a ship launched in 1932), showcases the city’s iconic waterfront, with colorful 17th-century colonial buildings, adorned with distinctive Dutch Golden Age architecture and steeply gabled facades, including the historic Penha Building, constructed in 1708.

In the foreground, local vendors on shaded boats and small docks display a variety of goods for sale, from fruits and flowers to hats and souvenirs, catering to the tourists from the cruise liner. A lively market atmosphere is enhanced by scenes of daily life: a man leads a donkey cart carrying a barrel, and another man sits at the end of the pier, casting his fishing line into the calm harbor waters.

This poster is a beautiful example of mid-20th-century travel advertising, enticing tourists with the charm and allure of Curaçao's historic port and local life.
