Description

Rare early (proof state) of Joseph-Nicolas Delisle's important early map of Finland.

The map was created by Delisle for his Russischer Atlas : Welcher in einer General-Charte und neunzehen Special-Charten das gesamte Russische Reich und dessen angraentzende Laender, nach den Regeln der Erd-Beschreibung und den ne Academie der Wissenschafften in 1745 in St. Petersburg, the first atlas of Russia. Published by the Academy of Sciences, this atlas builds upon the earlier cartographic work of Ivan K. Kirilov. According to Postnikov, "It brings together all the geographical discoveries of the early 18th century to provide a more comprehensive depiction of the entire Russian Empire than the so-called Kirilov Atlas. The maps were primarily based on instrumental surveys, geographical descriptions, and cartographic compilations by the Petrine geologists and their successors."  The standard edition of the atlas contains 20 maps but often comes with additional maps. The cartouche texts are in Latin, and the atlas was also issued in French and Russian, under the titles Atlas Russicus and Atlas Rossiiskoi.

The present example is apparently in unique, in that it only includes titles in Latin. All examples of the map we located include nams in both Latin and Russian.

The map would appear to be an early or proof state, as most of the place names include single or double guide lines (lines guiding the engraver to keep the lettering on a straight line).
