IT’S YOUR WAY TO HELP LICK THE KAISER

This 1918 American propaganda poster, produced by the National Association of Manufacturers, is designed to boost wartime productivity and morale on the home front during World War I.

The poster features a cartoon panel illustrating a worker with a sledgehammer standing on a terrace labeled "American Industries." A piece of paper at his feet reads, “Stick To Your Job, My Boy. Uncle Sam,” signaling a direct encouragement from the government to civilian workers. The man, dressed in a work shirt with rolled-up sleeves and a tool belt, tips his hat toward an image of Uncle Sam in the clouds, confidently exclaiming, “You bet I will!”  This scene captures the patriotic spirit expected of American workers, emphasizing that staying employed and productive is their contribution to the war effort.

To the right, bold, eye-catching text in red and blue reads: “WILL YOU CO-OPERATE OR WILL YOU OBSTRUCT?” attributed to President Woodrow Wilson. The message continues with a reminder that maintaining one’s job will “help to shorten the war and pave the way for a prosperous peace.” The demand for supplies for American soldiers “Over there” is described as urgent, stressing that “every bit of man power we possess is needed.” For those unable to enlist in military service, the message encourages them to secure a job and “hold on to it,” reinforcing the importance of civilian labor in supporting the war.

This poster encapsulates the role of American industry and labor in the war effort, framing work and productivity as patriotic duties essential to defeating the enemy and achieving peace.
