Description

Scarce copperplate engraving of George Washington, identifying him as "General Washington," engraved by John Baker and published in London by William Bent, published shortly after his death in 1799.

George Washington (1732–1799), is America's "Founding Father," military leader, politician, and farmer, who served as the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797. In 1775, the Second Continental Congress appointed him commander of the Continental Army, where he led the Patriot forces to victory in the American Revolutionary War. In 1787, Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention, which produced the current U.S. Constitution. Revered as a central figure in the nation's founding, Washington is often referred to as the "Father of His Country."
