A New Brunswick Pictorial Map Artist
This scarce pictorial map created by Peter Tasse, offers a visually rich and historically detailed representation of various exploration voyages that shaped the discovery and development of North America.
The map features dozens of intricate drawings of ships, explorers, and expedition routes, the map is marked with numerous compass roses and flourishes, blending aesthetics with the informative depictions of early exploration history.
The map chronicles significant voyages from as early as the Norse explorations of Erik the Red and Leif Erikson, through to the Age of Discovery, highlighting key figures such as Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Hernán Cortés, and other prominent European explorers. These routes are illustrated with ships and dotted lines that show the progression of the explorers through major regions of North and Central America, and the Caribbean. Each explorer is accompanied by brief annotations detailing their expeditions, years of travel, and achievements. For example, Columbus’s voyages are marked around the Caribbean, while Ponce de Leon’s ventures into Florida and the southeastern United States are prominently noted.
The map spans the continent, with clear attention to both the Atlantic and Pacific coastlines, detailing expeditions that occurred on both fronts. In the west, the journeys of Spanish explorers like Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Francisco de Ulloa are traced along the Pacific coast. On the eastern side, European explorers like Henry Hudson and Jacques Cartier are shown navigating the waterways of what are now the United States and Canada.
The maker of the map, Peter R. Furse, created several other pictorial maps, including maps of Canada, The Maritime Provinces of Canada, Southern Ontario, Southern Quebec, Eastern North America and California.
The map takes care to categorize and differentiate the nationalities of the explorers, with an inset legend explaining the corresponding flags and colors used. Spanish explorers like Cortés, Pizarro, and De Soto are distinguished from French navigators like Cartier and Champlain, Englishmen like John Cabot, and others, thus offering a broader European context for the exploration of North America.
