Description

A detailed and attractively colored folding map of Upper and Lower Canada, issued to accompany the 1853 edition of Mackay’s Canada Directory. The map provides a finely engraved depiction of what are now Ontario and Quebec, extending west to Lake Superior and east to Lake St. Francis, with counties, townships, and major transportation infrastructure clearly delineated. Canals, railroads, and proposed railroad routes are marked, along with township boundaries and settlement clusters.

Notable for its early reflection of emerging railway development in Canada West (Ontario), the map shows existing rail connections along the northern shore of Lake Ontario, the Rideau Canal, and St. Lawrence River infrastructure, including steamboat routes.

Published in New York by Thayer, Bridgman & Fanning at 156 William Street and printed by D.M. Lellan (26 Spruce St.), the map is lithographed in a decorative 1850s style, with a large flourished title and ornamental floral border. At lower left is a statistical census table of 1852 populations for counties in Canada East and West.

Issued at a moment of growing commercial connection between Canada and the United States (shortly before the Reciprocity Treaty of 1854) the map is a valuable snapshot of cross-border publishing and the infrastructure of Canadian mobility during the pre-Confederation period.
