Rare Vibrantly Colored Example
Rare vibrantly colored 1876 edition of this fine map of San Francisco, published to accompany Henry G. Langley's San Francisco Directory.
The map was almost certainly issued separately, as virtually all copies of the directory lack the map. The present example is vibrantly colored, much more so that the prior edition of 1875.
This unusual variant of the map shows the City and Outside Lands, overprinted in red. The map locates wards (numbered) early streets, public buildings, wharves and other important features. Along the waterfront, the areas being reclaimed from the bay are illustrated.
At the center of the map, the largely undeveloped San Miguel Rancho still appears, with the Spring Valley Water Works (the primary source of San Francisco's water) and Alms House Tract and House of Refuge appearing. A massive Golden Gate Park is delineated, along with a smaller unnamed park to the east (Buena Vista Park) and Golden Gate Race Course at the northeast corner of Golden Gate Park.
In the North, the Presidio Reservation is shown, with the Fort Point Fortifications, Presidio Barracks and Marine Hospital named.
Along the north coast, the areas of landfill can be seen, with a Government Reservation (Fort Mason) and Lobos Square (Moscone Fields) noted.
In University Mound, the original University Grounds are noted, showing University College of San Francisco, founded by the Reverend George Burrowes in 1859 and relocated to the site shown here in 1862. The area was laid out around the college, with streets in one direction all named after famous schools (Dartmouth, Göttingen, Colby) and in the other direction after educators, particularly university presidents (Timothy Dwight, Benjamin Silliman, Francis Wayland). The college building burned in 1875 and the college had closed by 1881.
In the west, the Ocean Race Course appears in Rancho Laguna de la Merced.
Rarity
This is a rare early edition of the map, which normally appears on the market in an 1891 or 1892 edition.
