Description
Interesting photograph of a street scene in Downtown San Diego, showing the corner of Fifth Street and Market Street, looking north toward Banker's Hill.
Businesses showing include Karl Epstein's People's Store in the foreground at the left, at 600-608 Fifth Avenue. Epstein advertised among other places in the German language Sud California Deutsche Zeitung in 1899 and 1900.
Karl Epstein moved to the Grass Valley area about 1901, where he bought a shoe store from George Murphy.
Condition Description
Original silver gelatin print, mounted on card. Tiny manuscript caption on paper "San Diego" pasted on print. Possibly a later (early 20th-century) printing from the original negative.
