Description

Nice example of Lahontan's map of Canada and the Great Lakes, from Boston, Manat (Manhattan) and Monts Notre Dame south of the St. Lawrence to Lake Superior, Lake Micigan and Lake Huron.

Lahontan's maps were among the most influential of all mythical cartographic works of North America, effecting the cartographic landscape of the Great Lakes, Upper Mississippi, Plains and Rocky Mountain Regions for nearly 50 years. Issued in Memoires de l'Amerique Septentrionale ou la Suite des Voyages .... (first published in 1705), one of the most influential and fanciful works of its time. The present map is centered on Montreal, Fort Frontenac and Fort Niagara, alson showing Fort St. Joseph, Misiti Mackinac, Saute S. Marie, etc.

Lahontan's introduction of the Longue River on his western maps was copied by virtually all 18th-century cartographers, including Moll, Senex, Popple, and Delisle, thus perpetuating the myth.

McCorkle describes four versions and shows 7 states of this map indicating how popular these voyages were.
