Description

This lithographic print, drawn from an original painting by John Trumbull in 1804, memorializes George and Martha Washington, depicting a somber scene in a tranquil setting.

To the left, two women and a young man are portrayed in mourning, standing together under the shade of tall trees. On the right, a large stone urn rests upon a pedestal, adorned with relief busts of George and Martha Washington. In the background, Mount Vernon, the Washington family estate, is visible, adding a sense of place and historical significance. Three deer wander near the wooded area to the right, enhancing the natural, peaceful surroundings.

The inscription beneath the image notes that the lithograph is based on "an original picture painted in 1804, in possession of the Washington family." This popular image, originally created by Samuel Seymour, was first printed in 1804. The print was lithographed by Bingham & Dodd of Hartford and published just after Mount Vernon was opened to the public by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association in 1860.
