This vibrantly colored lithograph, by Nathaniel Currier, commemorates a significant moment in American history: George Washington’s reception at Trenton, New Jersey, on his way to be inaugurated as the first President of the United States in April 1789.
The scene depicts Washington on horseback, in military regalia, flanked by his officers, acknowledging the tribute of a large group of women and girls who offer floral wreaths in his honor. Above the scene is an elaborate patriotic display, including an American eagle and flags, referencing Washington’s pivotal role in the Battle of Trenton in 1776, a major turning point in the American Revolution.
