Description
Published by the Hakluyt Society in 1892, this two-volume set comprises Pietro Della Valle's eight letters on western India, accompanied by a frontispiece portrait of Della Valle, a plate showing Davis' quadrant and a cross-staff, a plan of Goa, a map illustrating his voyages, and a comprehensive preface by Edward Grey. Della Valle, who traveled to India for neither trade nor duty, offers an impressively detailed travelogue.
Condition Description
Octavo. Two volumes, each in contemporary polished calf armorial binding of the General Assembly of New Zealand Library. The spine in six compartments separated by raised bands; morocco title pieces in the second and third; the rest tooled in gilt. Marbled edges and endpapers. Label of the General Assembly of New Zealand Library to front pastedowns. Each with purple silk pagemarker. Inked stamp to half-title page. (Cracking at joints, but holding. Much of calf at spine worn off. A few scratches to covers).
