Description

Captain William Coats' previously unpublished notes of his voyages around Hudson Bay, were compiled and published by the Hakluyt Society in 1852 (edited by John Barrow). Coats was dismissed from service in 1751 after he was found guilty of engaging in illicit trade and died in 1752; his copious notes, intended to shape a geographical work of Hudson Bay, were unpublished for 100 years.

Condition Description
Octavo. Late-19th-century polished calf armorial binding of the General Assembly of New Zealand Library. The spine in six compartments separated by raised bands; morocco title pieces in the second and third; the rest tooled in gilt. (Scuffed, calf worn at joints. Corners bumped). Marbled edges and endpapers. General Assembly of New Zealand Library to front pastedown. Ink ownership inscription to half-title ("Revd. Thomas Bell"). Occasional faint foxing.
