One of the Earliest Obtainable Maps of the State of Georgia

Joseph Scott's detailed map of Georgia and West Florida, published in Philadelphia in 1795.

The map is highly detailed and includes Georgia extending to the Mississippi River, with West Florida included. Includes many early place names. The map appeared Scott's The United States Gazetteer: Containing an Authentic Description of the Several States. Their Situation, Extent, Boundaries, Soil, Produce, Climate, Population, Trade and Manufactures. Together with the Extent, Boundaries, and Population of their Respective Counties. Also, an Exact account of the Cities, Towns, Harbours, Rivers, Bays, Lakes, Mountains, &c. Illustrated with Nineteen Maps, Printed in Philadelphia by F. & R. Bailey, at Yorick's Head, No. 116.

The map is quite scarce, this being the second example we have ever offered.

Tunison's Georgia and South Carolina

HC Tunison's Peerless Atlas is one of the most interesting American Atlases of the late 19th Century. Published in Jacksonville, Illinois, the title page also lists, New York City; London, Canada; San Francisco; Atlanta, Chicago and Cincinnati as places where the atlas was published. Tunison's Atlas is a fascinating cross over of styles between the modern commercial publishers of Chicago (Rand McNally and Geo. F. Cram) and the still active older map publishers (Colton, Mitchell, Johnson and Gray). The maps employ bright colors and identify counties and townships, towns, railroads, railroad stations, rivers and many other minute details, plus include a decorative printed border (including HC Tunison's initials in the corners), but now employ the later printing methods employed by the modern firms. The result is an attractive and unique map for the period. For this reason, Tunison's maps have always been prized by collectors as an excellent example of a blended late 19th Century printing style. In recent years, Tunison's maps have been utilized in map exhibitions at the New York Public Library and elsewhere. A fine example, employing Tunison's trademark colors and border.
