Description

Scarce and map of North America produced for the overland trade to the gold regions. Smith's map first appeared in 1843 as an inset map to Smith's monumental wall map of the United States. The map was issued in 1849 as a pocket map of North America, this being the second edition and the first to include the gold region, which is largely based upon Fremont's map. This first edition with the Gold Regions is very scarce, Wheat having only located a single copy at the California State Library, which was bound in a black folder. Ours is bound in brown cloth w/ title Map of North America & the Gold Regions in gilt. This 1st ed. predates the appearance of Sacramento, Fremont, Suison, Stockton, Stanislaus & other early placenames. Wheat 124. Not in Rumsey.
