Description

This 1820 school atlas map, titled Romanum Imperium, provides a comprehensive depiction of the Roman Empire at its height. Published by Cummings & Hilliard of Boston, the map is both geographically detailed and historically significant, intended for educational use in early 19th-century schools.

The map illustrates the Roman Empire’s territorial extent, covering the Mediterranean basin—the "Mare Internum" or "Mare Nostrum"—and much of Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, Gaul, Italy, Greece, and large portions of Britannia. To the east, it extends across the territories of modern-day Turkey, the Levant, and northern Africa, reaching as far as the boundaries of the Parthian Empire and the Arabian deserts. The map also highlights the Roman provinces, naming regions such as Gallia, Germania, Hispania, Italia, and Africa

This map was designed to educate students on the expanse of Roman dominion and the reach of its influence during the classical era. The empire’s borders, the spread of Roman law and culture, and the interconnectedness of provinces would have been of interest to 19th-century students learning classical history. The inclusion of territories such as Pannonia, Moesia, and Dacia reflects the Roman Empire’s role in shaping European history.
