Rare map of the Texel, published in London by John Luffman.
The map titled The Texel, engraved and exhibited by J. Luffman on April 1, 1802, offers a depiction of Texel and its surrounding areas in the North Sea. Surrounding Texel are other notable islands such as Vlieland, Schelling (Terschelling), and Ameland, each clearly marked with their names. The eastern part of the map shows the Friesland coastline, including towns like Harlingen, Hindelopen, and Stavoren.
A significant historical event is noted at the bottom of the map. On August 30, 1799, Admiral Story surrendered the Dutch Fleet to British Admiral Mitchell in the Vlieter Channel near the New Red Buoy. The map provides the coordinates of this event: Latitude 53° 3.8' North and Longitude 4° 54' East of London.
Maps by John Luffman are very scarce on the market, this being the first time we have had this one.
