Description

This map is a Dutch text edition of Isaac Weld's map of the United States, from Reizen door de staaten van Noord-Amerika, en de provintiën van Opper- en Neder-Canada; in de jaaren 1795, 1796 en 1797.  The map is based upon the map of the US which apperaed in English edition of the travels of Isaac Weld (1774-1856).

The map meticulously traces Isaac Weld’s travel routes, marked alongside his name, offering insights into the paths taken during his explorations.

Isaac Weld's map captures a crucial period in the early formation of the United States, reflecting the country's geography shortly after the American Revolution. Weld, an Irish traveler and writer, documented his extensive travels through North America during the years 1795-1797. His works were widely published and translated, contributing significantly to the European understanding of the young American republic. The map highlights the territories and states as they existed in the late 18th century, a time of burgeoning statehood and westward expansion.

The map details the eastern states of the United States, from the northern boundaries of Maine to the southern limits of the Carolinas. The inclusion of Ohio reflects the early stages of American expansion into the Northwest Territory.  A prominent feature of this map is the inset centered on Georgia and South Carolina located in the lower right corner.

The map meticulously traces Isaac Weld’s travel routes, marked alongside his name, offering insights into the paths taken during his explorations.

While this map shares similarities with earlier Weld maps (noted in McCorkle’s references: #798.5, 799.6, 800.4), it is distinguished by its Dutch text, reflecting the publication's intent to reach a Dutch-speaking audience. The absence of this edition in McCorkle’s listings underscores its rarity and potential value to collectors and historians of cartography.
