Description

Tyosen Corée, an exquisite and rare map of Korea, was prepared in 1872 by R.P. Carceri, a missionary associated with the Société des Missions Etrangères. This map was later published as a supplement to the Journal les Missions Catholiques in 1898, reflecting its enduring relevance and value to the scholarly and religious communities of the time.

The map is distinguished by its meticulous detail and comprehensive coverage of the Korean peninsula, capturing its complex topography with precision. Mountain ranges, rivers, and coastlines are carefully delineated, serving both as a navigational aid and a scholarly record. The use of various symbols, as explained in the accompanying legend, highlights provincial capitals, walled cities, and locations with Christian communities, emphasizing the spread of Christianity in the region.

The legend provides a clear key to the map’s various symbols, marking administrative centers, military posts, and areas without fortifications. Notably, circles denote towns with Christian populations, underscoring the missionary influence at the time.

Created during a period of profound change in Korea, this map offers a snapshot of the region just before the onset of major political reforms and the opening to international influence. The work of missionaries like R.P. Carceri was pivotal in introducing Western religious and cultural values to Korea, making this map a significant document of cultural and historical exchange.
