Description

A richly detailed engraved portrait of Aelia Paetina, the second wife of Emperor Claudius, rendered in the guise of an idealized Roman matron. She is shown in luxurious classical attire adorned with jewelry and a diadem, standing in front of a dramatic architectural backdrop with ancient ruins and columns. The engraving is part of a larger series of Roman imperial women, exemplifying both Sadeler's technical virtuosity and the humanist interest in classical antiquity.

Aelia Paetina married Claudius in 28 AD, thirteen years before he ascended to the imperial throne. They had one daughter, Claudia Antonia, before divorcing in 31 AD, following the downfall and execution for treason of her adoptive brother, Lucius Aelius Sejanus, commander of the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Tiberius. Aelia was reputedly executed by Nero in 65 or 66 AD after rejecting his proposal of marriage.
