Description

This 1820 portrait of Sir Robert Heath (1575–1649), etched by Richard Sawyer, is a careful reengraving of Wenceslaus Hollar’s original 1664 plate. Heath is depicted three-quarter length in his judicial robes, wearing a lawyer’s cap and an elaborate lace-edged ruff, with a collar with the Beaufort Portcullis(?) rendered in sharp detail. The sitter’s expression is alert and severe, befitting a man who served as Attorney-General under Charles I and later as Lord Chief Justice of the King’s Bench.
