Description

Unrecorded Hungarian map of the United States, lithographed by Antal Vietoris.

The present map is quite difficult to date.  The data on the map described below suggests a date between about 1836 and the early 1840s.  Notably, Antal Vietoris is not yet using his company name of Vietortis Lithographic Institute (formed in 1841) and the earliest railroad and territorial data is consistent with a pre-Iowa Territory dating.

The first Hungarian to settle in the United States was Agosgon Haraszthy (1812-1869), who settled in Wisconsin in 1840, where he became quite active in business and real estate speculation, before moving the California in 1849 and ultimately becoming the father of the California Wine Industry.  The first significant waive of immigrants came during and after the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-1849.  Haraszthy wrote a book about the United States published in Budapest in 1844 and re-issued in 1851 (Utazás Éjszakamerikában), but it does not seem to have included a map.

The map place names suggest a date in the mid-1830s, as Wisconsin in named Ouisconsin and Wisconisn became a Territory in 1836, whereas Iowa (not shown) became a Territory in 1838.  The railroad shown all seem to be from the mid 1830s:

  • The New Orleans to Nashville Railroad Company was formed in about 1834, but seems never to have operated.
  • The Montgomery Railroad was chartered in 1832, with a line from Columbus, Georgia to Montgomery Alabama chartered in 1834.
  • The first railroad from Athens Georgia to Charleston was completed in 1841.

The map identifies Csatornak (Canals) and Vasutak (Railroads).

Given all the data, the best guess is that the map was printed at or shortly after the printing of Haraszthy's book in 1844.
