Description

The map Regna Portugalliae et Algarbiae, cum adjacentibus Hispaniae Provinciis. Quibus in peculiari et minori Mappa adjunctum est Brasiliae Regnum by Tobias Conrad Lotter, produced in the mid-18th century, represents the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarve, along with adjacent Spanish provinces and a detailed inset of the Kingdom of Brazil.

In the mid-18th century, Portugal was a significant maritime power, with a vast colonial empire. The country was ruled by King Joseph I (reigned 1750–1777), under the influential administration of the Marquis of Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo. Pombal's reforms modernized Portugal's economy and administration, strengthened its colonial grip, and revitalized Lisbon after the devastating earthquake of 1755. The map captures the geopolitical reality of a Portugal that was striving to maintain its imperial dominion and adapt to the shifting dynamics of European power politics.

The cartouche, a prominent decorative feature, showcases the title within an ornate frame adorned with maritime symbols, heraldic shields, and allegorical figures. The shield of Portugal and the heraldic symbols of the Algarve are prominently displayed, underscoring the sovereignty and territorial claims of the Portuguese Crown. The allegorical figures, including Neptune with a trident and cherubs, symbolize Portugal's maritime prowess and exploration legacy.

The inset map of Brazil, located in the lower left corner, highlights the importance of Brazil as a major Portuguese colony, colored by captaincies, and focused on its coastal regions. This detailed representation includes significant ports and cities. During this period, Brazil was a crucial source of wealth for Portugal, primarily due to its sugar plantations, gold mines, and later, coffee production. The inclusion of Brazil in the map underscores its geopolitical significance and the economic interdependence between the colony and the metropole.
