Description
A pair of 1911 quadrangle maps (Holtville and Yuma) covering the border region between Calexico and southeast of Yuma.
Colonel George Ruhlen’s annotations trace significant historical routes, including the Kearny route, which refers to General Stephen W. Kearny’s 1846 expedition during the Mexican-American War. Cooke's route follows Colonel Philip St. George Cooke’s 1846–47 Mormon Battalion march, which established the first wagon road to California. The Butterfield Overland Mail route (1858–61) was the first transcontinental mail service. Emigrant trails show westward migration paths, with wells and river crossings also noted. Fort Defiance marks a military post significant in protecting settlers.
