Description

This set of two quadrangle sheets from the U.S. Geological Survey, dated 1915, covers the city of San Diego. Annotated by Colonel George Ruhlen, a prominent Southern California historical geographer, the map features detailed manuscript notes highlighting the routes of both Kearny and Portolá (July 1769) as well as key historical military sites in the San Diego area. These include the Presidio, San Diego Barracks, Fort Stockton, Fort Du Pont, Fort Rosecrans, Castillo Guijarros, Fort Pio Pico, Coronado Beach Reservation, Camp Riley, and others. Ruhlen’s attention to military history transforms these base maps into a visual narrative of San Diego’s historical fortifications and expeditions.
