Includes Maps With Unusual Thematic Cartouches
This atlas represents the principal work of Gabriel Bodenehr, a German cartographer from a distinguished family of engravers and publishers based in Augsburg.
Fascinating world atlas, which includes a number of maps with interesting illustrations, coats of arms and other embellishments. The volume features an engraved double-page title, a letterpress foreword, and a table of contents. Highlights include 4 double-hemisphere world maps, a hydrographic map, maps of the continents, and detailed regional maps. The first four maps focus on America, followed by extensive coverage of Europe and its countries. Many of the maps are adorned with decorative title cartouches, and some are labeled in Latin.
This is an early state of the atlas, which predates the addition of the map of Russia.
Gabriel Bodenehr the Elder (ca. 1673-ca. 1766) was a German engraver and publisher. He originated views of many German cities, for example the first plan of Passau (1710), and is best known for his Atlas Curieux (1704). His son, Gabriel the Younger (1705-1779), followed his father in his profession and was also a well-known engraver.
