Finely colored example of this scarce map of the Holy Roman Empire, embellished with views of major cities and images of 8 Holy Roman Electors.
This is the 8th edition (of 11!) of this map, which appeared in 4 states between 1621 and 1645 with completely different borders. From 1647 onwards the map was published as the present one with the border engraved by Pieter Hendricksz Schut, among other things the emperor and electors are shown standing with their coats of arms and no longer riding. (Meurer, p. 409).
The oval views are based upon the views of Braun & Hogenberg, and show Prague, Cologne, Speyer, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Trier, Mainz and Leipzig.
