Description

This land classification map of Southern California, including the ephemeral Kern and Buena Vista Lakes, was issued on June 30, 1879, as part of the U.S. Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian. The survey was led by 1st Lieutenant George M. Wheeler, during expeditions in 1875 and 1878. The map uses color-coding to differentiate various land uses, including agricultural areas, grazing lands, timber regions, and other classifications. Topographical features are depicted in detail, showcasing the mountainous terrain, valleys, rivers, and significant landmarks. The area covered includes parts of Southern California, highlighting regions such as the western part of the Mojave Desert and Bakersfield. The scale of the map is approximately 1:253,440, providing a comprehensive and detailed view of the geography at that time.
