With a Nice Color Map of California by Colton

First edition of this important Gold Rush-era account of California. Capron came to California in the spring of 1853, arriving in San Francisco on May 21 as a representative of New York mercantile interests.  His account is useful for its first-hand descriptions of mining, Chinese residents, gambling, and the social situation in San Francisco at the time.

The fine folding colored map by J.H. Colton includes an inset street map of San Francisco.

This work gives extensive treatment of the Mexican War and the conquest of California. Part two gives a detailed description of San Francisco, and part three a description of the gold mines of California - Hill.

The final section of the book includes the text of Capron's journal of travel from New York to Nicaragua and California.
