Rare Italian Map Engraved By Matthaus Seutter as an Apprentice to Jeremias Wolff
This rare, engraved map of Italy, based upon the cartographic work of French Royal Geographer Guillaume de L'Isle, is the work of Augsburg publisher Jeremias Wolff.
The map was engraved by Mattheus Seutter, who was apprenticed to Wolff at the time. This early example of Seutter's work marks a significant point in his career before he became a renowned cartographer.
Published in Augsburg, this map represents one of the most detailed and scientifically accurate depictions of Italy from the early 18th century. Guillaume de l'Isle was the son and student of the famous astronomer and cartographer Jean Dominique Cassini. De l'Isle was known for his precise and elegant cartographic work, which set a high standard for subsequent maps produced in Holland and Italy.
