Finely engraved portrait of Ferdinand Magellan by Crispijn de Passe the Elder in about 1598.
This print was published as a plate in Van Passe's extremely are work entitled Effigies Regum Ac Principum…depictae, et tabellis aeneis incisae a Crispiano Passaeo Zelando, Cologne, 1598, one of the most beautifully illustrated biographical books of the 16th century. The elegant engravings consist of a double-page world map, maps of the north and south celestial hemispheres, four views of fully rigged ships at sea, and eighteen portraits of the rulers who maintained great fleets (including Queen Elizabeth during her reign) and of their leading overseas navigators. The latter are Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan, Pizzaro, Drake, Cavendish, and Laudonniere. Drake and Cavendish are both shown with a double-hemisphere world map in the foreground showing the tracks of their respective circumnavigations.
