Description

Scarce Italian map of the Northwest, Canada and Alaska, published in Venice by Le Sage.

This map is one of the underappreciated gems of Northwestern cartography, with credits and notes regarding Lewis & Clarke, Franklin, Parry, Beechley, Astoria, MacKenzie, Maldonado and the Russian discoveries in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

A number of early treaty boundaries and 16th-18th Century exploration notes are also included, includingin Barentsz, Hudson and Phipps & Mulgrave.

A note on the boundary between British and Russian America notes that "From the Portland Channel, the boundary joins the mountains, and where they diverge, the boundary continues parallel to the sinuosity of the shore at a distance of ten leagues. It repeals the agreement of 1821."

The map presents an unusual visual / graphic style that is unlike any other map of the time.
