Description

An early bird's-eye view photograph of late 19th-century downtown San Diego. The perspective is from the Russ School, current site of San Diego High School (corner of Russ Street and Park Blvd.) The Russ School was established in 1882 and named for lumberman Joseph Russ, who provided building materials for the school building.

The view shows many downtown homes and business buildings, including the office of the long defunct San Diego Daily Bee.

Though not signed, we are reasonably certain the photographer was Henry Ellis Coonley, whose other signed caption titles are in an identical hand as that in the present image.
