Description

This detailed 1824 map of Edinburgh provides a finely rendered depiction of the Scottish capital, displaying its evolving urban landscape during the early 19th century.  The map captures both the historical and contemporary city with remarkable precision.

The map showcases prominent thoroughfares, including Princes Street and George Street in the New Town, designed in the neoclassical style, and the dense, medieval layout of the Old Town clustered around the Royal Mile. Notable landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle, sitting atop Castle Rock, and the striking Holyrood Palace, nestled near Arthur’s Seat, are prominently illustrated. Parks and green spaces, such as Calton Hill and the Meadows, are well represented, emphasizing the city's balance between urban development and open public spaces.

Key architectural landmarks are depicted with meticulous attention, including St. Giles’ Cathedral, the University of Edinburgh, and the various elegant squares and crescents of the New Town.
