Description

Rare pictorial map of Seattle by Frank McCaffrey and illustrator Alf Restad, published the same year the McCaffrey founded Dogwood Press (under his and Jay F. Horst's Acme Press) and five years before their New Dogwood Map of Seattle.

The map has a printed border and is oriented with east at the top. Major icons of the city, such as parks, the University of Washington, Pike Place Market, Deep Sea Aquarium, Woodland Park Zoo, and Boeing Field, are highlighted. Other illustrations within the map include a hobo singing "The Big Rock Candy Mountains" in Georgetown, a Nordic man under the word "LUTEFISK!" in Ballard, racist caricatures in Madrona and Chinatown, and references to chicken dinner inns along Bothell Way.

Rarity

This map is very rare on the market. OCLC reports three institutional holdings; there is an additional example at Penrose Library at Whitman College, where McCaffrey donated a large archive of his work.

Not in Rumsey.

Condition Description
Laid on modern archival linen, with repaired tears at right and left. Some border loss at right (reinstated). Good to VG.
