Description

Fascinating manuscript map of the area bounded by Seventh Street and the Germantown Road, with Sixth Street in the Middle.

The document verso states that it is a Draft of Samuel Dickinson's lots let out on Grount Rent on the Germantown Road & 6th St. Plan owners named include the Samuel Mifflin, the Estate of William Masters Esq., Jacob Rihl, Chas O Niell, John Snyder, Jacob Bowers, Caspar Albert, Michl. Meyer, John Weiser, Thomas Mount, William Henry, William Smith and Nathaniel Gosling. We dated the map based upon the fact that Rihl, Alpert and Mifflin all appear to have been alive and residents in Philadelphia at about this date. Dickinson was a major landowner and prominent colonial American, who appears to have owned a significant amount of land in the Germantown Road area and built the Dickinson Mansion in this area in the mid 18th Century. Worthy of further research!
