Attractive large portrait of Captain Cook. The portrait is was painted and engraved by Thornton and is the fronticipiece to Anderson's Large Folio Edition of the Whole of Captn Cook's Voyages &c. Complete. . The decorative portrait includes the details of Cook's 3 voyages between 1768 and 1780, including a note regarding his having been Unfortunately Killed by the Savages on the Island, Owhyee Feby. 14th 1779.

Alexander Hogg Biography

Alexander Hogg was a publisher active in London from 1778 to 1824. He worked under the sign of the Kings Arms on Paternoster Row. He is especially known for publishing architectural and historical prints, as well as maps.

Fascinating set of two images of ships, originally appearing from Coronelli's Atlante Veneto. The upper image shows two Dutch ships including a fluyt, a ship made specifically for maritime trade without any possible combat conversion, a rarity for the time. The lower image shows two English galleons. Both ships were heavily involved in the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 17th century, likely explaining the juxtaposition here shown.
