Description
Rare chart of Russia and Alaska, based upon the explorations of Kruzenstern and other early explorers.
Among the more interesting features of this map is the inclusion of a number of early Russian and Inuit place names in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.
Our research suggests that the mapis based upon a similar map of 1807 by
Johann Leonhard Spath, an astronomer, mathematician and geographer working in Nurmberg. This edition extends consideraby west of the original recognizing the importance of the Russian explorations, discoveries and claims in America, which are also included in the table at the upper right of the map.
This is the first time we have ever seen the map offered or sale.
Condition Description
Several small spots and some marginal soiling.
