Description

Decorative and interesting map of the US, shortly after the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the discovery of Gold in California.

The map still shows the shape of the former Republic of Texas and includes a number of Indian Territories which had since been abandoned, including Mandan, Huron, Osage, Ozark and Sioux Territories. A pre-Fremont California still dominates the west, including the two Lake Timpanagos, although a badly mislocated hint of the Sierras is present.

Remarkably, the Gold regions are shown, albeit following somewhat mythical rivers which had not yet been corrected. A marvelous example of the mapping of the Transmississippi West in 1849.
