Washington Map Society Meeting - October 26, 2000

  • Subject: Washington Map Society Meeting - October 26, 2000
  • From: Jeanne & Tom Sander <sanderva@erols.com>
  • Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000 13:27:13 -0400

The 2000-2001 Program Year started on September 26 with a fascinating examination of the maps of A.J. Johnson, presented by Ira Lourie.

The next meeting:
On Thursday October 26, 2000 at 7 PM, Mr. David Ingram, Licensed Land Surveyor, will present Survey and Resurvey of the Fairfax Line. In 1649 King Charles started something that continues to this very day. At that time he granted to his friends a parcel of land in Virginia described as "all the land between the Rappahanock and Potomoc Rivers". Approximately 100 years after that, surveys were completed and maps drawn that delineated the extent of this land grant. Now, approximately 350 years after the grant, surveyors are using modern technology to evaluate the work of the surveyors and good old fashioned detective work to try to find the beginning and ending point of the survey. This presentation will offer a historical review of the events, a presentation of several appropriate maps, and a review of recent survey work.

Coming meetings and trips:
On Saturday November 4, there will be a FIELD TRIP to the Office of Archaeology, City of Alexandria. We will see how the office uses maps in their excavation work in this colonial town on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. The current Portolan (Issue 48 - page 7) has complete details. It is requested that those planning to come RSVP by November 2 to Tom Sander by e-mail, sign-up at the October 26 meeting, mail or phone.

On Thursday November 16 at 7 PM, Mr. Jack Dangermond, Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc [ESRI] will present The Evolution of Geography and GIS: What It Means.
