Bob Ross

I am the author of the short notice in Mercator's World announcing Bob Ross'
death. Normally we would have tried to expand on the information for our
California Map Society Newsletter, but Bob's passing came at an awkward time.
The Newsletter had been printed and was ready for mailing. Greg McIntosh and
I attended the funeral which was quite moving. Glen McLaughlin, CMS President
was unable to attend but in a subsequent phone conversation he suggested a
one page tribute, to include the frontispiece from the Mt. Sinai Park
memorial service. This was quickly pulled together and went as a separate
sheet with the December Newsletter to our 200 or so members and friends.

Gary Turley phoned me a month or so ago and asked if I could quickly write
something since his dealine was also fast approaching. I suggested what we
had previously used, sent him a copy and hence the inclusion in Mercator's
World.

I think I can speak on behalf of those members of the California Map Society
who knew and perhaps also had commercial dealings with Bob. He was a charming
man who was always open to others. He had the reputation of being above board
and honest. His opinion was greatly valued because he was trusted. His
knowledge of what he carried was enormous. Most of the maps he sold came with
a one or more page treatise on what he could discover about it and its maker.
So Bob was not only a map dealer but a map lover.

His wife Marilyn was a great support and extremely brave in her talk about
him at the funeral. I can assure you there was not a dry eye in the house
when she was finished. Bob left a legacy of loving children and
grandchildren, perhaps the greatest monument any of us might hope for.
