We offer the following:
Wagner, Henry Raup. The Cartography of the Northwest Coast of
America To The Year 1800.
Berkeley: University of California Press, 1937. 2 vols. 543pp.
and Folio. Original cloth, near fine in near fine dust jackets.
A tremendously important work by a noted bibliographer. "All
of the bibliographical works of this eminent scholar are characterized by
profound research and great accuracy." - Cowan. Wagner's plan was to
describe each exploration and more than 900 important maps of the
northwest coast of America to demonstrate how the cartography of the
region developed from the purely imaginary and mythical to the hardheaded
precision of the Vancouver expedition. In addition to achieving that
goal, Wagner has given us a superb picture of the background that the
Spanish, French, Russians, English and Americans had to work with when
they planned their better-known voyages in the 19th century. Now
acknowledged to be one of Wagner's masterworks, this title had a rocky
beginning. Wagner advanced the University of California Press the funds
to print and publish the first edition in 1937. Streeter
4405.
