"The Portolan" has been published since 1984 and welcomes you to
investigate and try this thrice-yearly journal with articles on maps, the
history of cartography, and exploration. Below is information on the issue
just published. See the end of this message for the link to the contents
list of all back issues and an index to those issues. You will see that
the focus of the society and the journal is not solely Washington. There
is something for YOU in this journal.

"THE PORTOLAN": JOURNAL OF THE WASHINGTON MAP SOCIETY
ISSUE 61 (Winter 2004-2005)
--------------------------------------------------------------
Issue 61 (Winter 2004-2005), consisting of 80 pages, was published in
December 2004 and has been sent to all subscribers and members in good
standing of the Washington Map Society. Copies are available for purchase.

LOUIS CARDINAL puts to rest any uncertainty of who was the author of the
1657 map of New France ? it was Bressani. PETER HESSE reports on the days
surrounding D-Day and the making of maps and models to support it. WILLIAM
WOOLDRIDGE reveals a seldom seen letter which indicates how Ortelius
acquired some of the information for his maps of America. WES BROWN traces
maps from the earliest to Munster?s time. STEVE BOULAY describes his many
years collecting maps of Russia. KEN NEBENZAHL pens a moving tribute to
long time colleague and friend David Woodward. BERT JOHNSON reports on
IMCoS in Italy and gives readers 24 useful hints on preparing for ICHC 2005
in Budapest. A summary is presented of the Washington Map Society?s annual
business meeting. The winner of the 2004 Ristow Prize is announced ? it is
Veronica Della Dora. Details are given of a copperplate special at the
Library of Virginia. Announcement is made of the new Portolan Editorial
Advisory Board. Four books and two maps are reviewed. And there is more.
"The Portolan" is published three times per year; issue 62 is due for
release in late April 2005.
