Dear Colleagues,

We have made another routine update of our site.  We have about 500 maps
listed; about 400 of them are illustrated.  We want to remind you of a few
things about our site.

1.  You can control the number of entries downloaded per page.  Enter the
number you prefer in the box labeled "Show" near the top of the page; then
press "Enter" on your keyboard or press the button at the right of the "Show"
box.  It is pre-set to 5 entries per page.

2.  On our book pages we list approximately 100 books, including antiquarian
books (over 100 years old) containing maps plus modern books (post 1900) about
maps and mapmakers.

3.  Our "Antique Prints" page includes frontispieces, portraits, topographic
scenes, birds-eye views, flags, etc., found in antique atlases and books
containing maps.

4.  Our "Cartographic Instruments" page lists antique cartographic instruments
used to survey the land and sea, draw the maps, and navigate.

5.  Our "Recent Additions" lists the most recently added items.

6.  Our "Search for Maps" gives you two options:

    (1).  "Focused Database Search" where you designate an area (such as a
state
or city), a mapmaker, or a few words from a map title.

    (2).  "Catalog Text Search" where you can search for maps using almost any
word or words you choose.  This search looks at the entire data base.

7.  We use "detail" images of some of the maps so you can better see the
quality and style of the workmanship.  We have pre-selected a few square inches
which you will be prompted to see when you call up the large images.
