Re. Peter Guthrie in his fine book re. this subject, and in other
references such as Schwartz & Ehrenberg, the U. S. Navy surveyed and
charted U. S. Coast from c. 1816 to 1885 (or 1905?).  Which date is
correct, assuming, accurately I hope, that that is when the U. S. Coast &
Geodetic group took over.
