Binding Strips

Hi,

I looking to get your thoughts about the significance
of the binding strips on individual maps after an
atlas has been broken. Should they be left on the
map, removed, or does it matter? I ask the question
from the perspective of maintaining the map's value
and in terms of preserving the map.

The question comes about in cases where I take a
former atlas map to a conservator who uses a liquid
bath to clean/deacidify. During this process, the
strip is generally removed because the glue is
softened. In my mind there are pros and cons to this:

Pros:

- removing the strip and the associated glue may be an
act of preservation.
- makes it easier to flatten the map.

Cons:

- the strip protects the fragile fold area.
- the strip is sometimes advertised as value feature.

Thanks

Wes
