Description

First edition in English of Johan Nieuhoff's account of his service with both the Dutch West India and Dutch East India Companies.

The work first appeared in Dutch under the title Zee- en Lant-Reise door verscheide Gewesten van Oostindien in 1682.

“Nieuhof, a Dutch traveler and official, left two very interesting accounts of his years spent in Dutch Brazil and the Dutch East Indies. In his several travels in the East, he visited Dutch South Africa, Sumatra, Java, Amboyna, Formosa, China, Malacca, India, Ceylon, Persia, and St. Helena. His narratives give very informative accounts of the places he visited” (Hill 1227)

Nieuhof’s work was initially published in English as the second volume of the 1704 first edition of Awnsham and John Churchill’s four-volume Collection of Voyages and Travels (hence the "Vol. II" at the bottom of the letterpress title page). However, this volume is sometimes offered separately, as it is here.
