Description
Early Map of the State of Maine
One of the earliest obtainable maps of the Province of Maine, as issued in the American Edition of Guthrie's Geography. This is the 1795 version, lacking the page number present in the 1800 state.
Of primary interest in this chart is the early view of the state of Maine. Only a few small towns are depicted such as Portland or Falmouth. A solitary road from Piscataqua Harbor to Pownalboro is illustrated, as are the many rivers and mountains that make up the state. Situated at the extreme ends of the chart are large, blank regions for the British-owned Quebec and Nova Scotia. The boundary between Maine and British possessions is shown as a line that demarcates the border according to the 1783 Treaty of Paris.
